If you follow my posts on social media, you already know that I encourage my patients to research the benefits of weight loss “drugs.” Although they can be controversial, the evidence is mounting in terms of the ground-breaking solution these medications provide for patients and the life-changing effects they can have BEYOND JUST LOSING WEIGHT.

Studies show that these drugs can help prevent heart attacks, strokes, and cognitive decline. The American College of Cardiology recently recommended that weight-loss drugs such as GLP-1s should be a first line of offense in treating obesity and preventing heart disease. In fact, “exercise and a clean diet aren’t always enough for heart health,” the ACA said in new recommendations released recently, according to MSN.

Further, an exciting study in JAMA Neurology May 2025 (published by the American Medical Association) confirmed that GLP-1 medications significantly DECREASE the risk of Alzheimer disease and related dementias (ADRD) in patients with type 2 diabetes.

Additional studies are underway to learn more about addiction treatment potential. The medications can also work on the rewards pathway and curb cravings for alcohol and other addictive behavior such as gambling. Recently, the FDA approved them for treatment of obstructive sleep apnea.

EXPERTISE MATTERS
As always, when considering GLP-1 treatment, people need to remember that EXPERTISE MATTERS. For safe and effective treatment, it is critical that the patient’s practitioner is trained in internal medicine or family practice medicine so that proper dosing and ongoing monitoring is conducted by someone who is experienced and highly-trained – medical professionals are experts in minimizing risks that come along with any medical intervention.

ONGOING RESEARCH
More research is being done on various aspects of GLP treatments, including long-term protocol and microdosing. I stay at the forefront of this research so that I can deliver the highest-quality treatment program to my patients for optimal, overall physical health.
